Who can possibly forget the iconic try James scored against France as four Frenchmen desperately tried to stop him?
At the height of his career, James was considered one of the top three hookers in the world along with Keith Wood and Sean Fitzpatrick. His lengthy rugby career includes numerous run-ins with the Aussies and the Kiwis, not to mention the top northern hemisphere sides.
When his precocious talent was recognised, James was selected for SA Schools. He went on to play for the OFS under 20 side. Returning home, he played for both Transvaal under 20 and under 21 sides, captaining both teams. James was then selected for the SA Universities side, which he captained for one of two years.
James has played for the Transvaal Seniors and was selected for the World XV side – an achievement that speaks for itself. He was selected to play in a star-studded Barbarians side alongside Zinzan and Robin Brooke, Jona Lomu, Os du Randt and Reuben Kruger.
James retired as a Springbok after representing South Africa in 43 tests.
Never one to shy away from a new experience, James appeared on the first season of “Strictly Come Dancing” in South Africa. Interestingly, no other local rugby player has followed suit.
For almost two decades, on field and off, this colourful character has perplexed, astounded and entertained fans and foes alike.
Since taking on the new role as proud father to 2 year old Danny and 6 month-old daughter Mila Jamie,James has thrown himself into environmental causes. James is constantly expanding his environmental awareness, and is a staunch animal rights activist.James has long been an outspoken advocate of animal rights and was the patron of Wetnose Animal Rescue Centre for a number of years. James is an advocate for reducing your carbon footprint and standing up for animal rights… helping make the world a better and greener place for the worlds children.
James brings the very same on-field drive and determination to the business end of GreenPlanet. James is adamant when he says, “We need to ensure that our children and their children can run and play and breathe fresh air. We don’t own this planet and we don’t have the right to destroy it.”
